In Ontario the main trim is best from late spring into early summer, once the new growth has come in, with an optional light trim in mid to late summer. Avoid hard cutting late in the fall: new growth will not harden before frost. Cedars do not regrow from bare brown wood, so a badly overgrown cedar hedge is brought back gradually over a couple of seasons. Active bird nests are protected by law, so we check before cutting in nesting season.
